Please give us a summary of your Journalism Career .

My association with the field of journalism began when I started working with Dainik Jagran (Hindi). Most of my work was associated with the local news, media and entertainment section. I spent a brief period of time with the aforementioned media group before I became a member of the Hindustan family. Initially with Hindustan Media as well, I was mainly a part of their Feature Section (involving articles on the reinvention of everyday life, stories related to the glamorous world of Mumbai, stories of survival and inspirational works).

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities at Hindustan Media ventures.

Currently, as I have mentioned above, I am working as a Principal Correspondent with the Hindustan Times (Hindi). My schedule for any normal day would include writing up news journals on topics assigned to me. My working hours and the amount of work is not really laid out from the start. There can be news and information coming in from any quarter and if it is associated with my beat, then I am required to give it my full time and come up with well researched write ups on it. Work for me is about networking and bringing out information from closed quarters.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join Journalism Profession?

It is a whole lot of adventure as you get to visit the hinterlands of the country for the purpose of reporting. It feels great to be able to work for the people (the common masses) directly or indirectly. Bringing out their woes and worries is a major part of my profession. It is interesting that how many people
do I come in touch with as a result of my constant involvement with this field. Different sources of information come up with different beats and you get to be a part of that process.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career in Journalism?

There are a few negatives like the tasks may seem too daunting to a few as a lot of work needs to be done to come up with a small write up. You have to be in constant touch with the world and you can not miss out on the details. The work environment in media houses in recent years has become too competitive. Everyone wants to be the eye candy (to win promotions, make it big), and with the coming in of corporate media houses, the quality has gone down and the focus is just on producing stuff for the sake of it. Income remains fixed for long periods of time. There is a little scope of income growth for a majority of people in the field.
