Please give us a summary of your Career.
I have always worked as an SAP Basis Consultant. I started my career from IBM India at the Pune location. Then, I got my SAP training from the company and after working there for 2 years, got married and came to Germany with my husband. I was lucky to work with IBM again as a part of CIC Magdeburg. Working on the same project since 5 years has given me a great insight into various scenarios in the professional run. From having the bond of trust with clients, getting more confidence everyday, facing challanging situations working at the client location to the handling of people with different interests – my job has taught me patience, effectiveness, multitasking and yet be calm and enjoy the weekend. Learning German would not have been fun if I did not had such wonderful colleagues always praising me for what I speak and do.
Please describe your current Job Responsibilities as SAP Basis Consultant.
We at SAP work as per the project guidelines and resolve the everyday issues plus taking care of everything in the long run. SAP BASIS Administrators have to also participate for system monitoring including database checks to logs, dumps, printers etc. Implementation of notes and RFCs, weekend upgrade tasks and Go-Lives, handling of priority issues via tickets etc. The fun part is coordinating with different teams and people while trying to resolve a complex issue – this increases the interaction, plus you get to know a lot of new stuff as well. Be calm and keep your personal and professional world separate always. You should be hard working in the sense of learning new things and remembering them. You need to maintain punctuality to complete assignments on time, be truthful to your deadlines and apologise if you do any mistakes – we all do so and the best is to accept, learn and let go of the past. Remember to work in a team and do not overthink personal grudges.
What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to become a SAP Consultant?
There is a good work-life balance. I can even work from home sometimes. I have very helpful colleagues, client location work is a great experience in itself. There is good exposure because of life issues we are expected to handle. Working with people from various age groups and different teams opens up a new perspective about how to solve issues and think out of the box. Wages and holidays are granted easily with no hassle. I am fortunate to have a supportive team.
What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career in IT Industry?
If you get angry and stressed easily, IT life is not for you. If you believe talking softly would help you get ahead – it is not the case. Work speaks here and self satisfaction is most important. It can be difficult to handle people sometimes because of different culture or backgrounds but that is the challenge added to your work – so be prepared to act calmly to such situations. If you over think of people actions and behavior, you need to ignore a lot of stuff to stay focused.
