Please give us a summary of your Career.

I started working as a Software Engineer at Microsoft India. Being a fresher from a college, there was a lot to learn about building high scale services and applications than just working on individual college projects. The tech industry is one of the rapidly changing and evolving fields where you need to be curious and willing to learn things to make new and improve existing software products. After working in Microsoft Hyderabad for 2 years, I decided to move to the Microsoft in the US to get more exposure and work with more diverse set of talented people from all around the world. It has been 5 years in Microsoft working as a developer, it is a continuous journey of learning & developing your skills.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities as Senior Software Engineer.

Currently, I work as a Senior Software Engineer on the Outlook Team in Microsoft. I work on developing services for Outlook Groups product, in particular. Day to day work involves coming up with requirements and solutions to technical problems, design and implementing scalable services and handling customer escalations etc. Responsibilities are not just confined to building new features but also maintaining and improving existing code using Object-Oriented Design techniques. The best part of the job is working with a diverse set of people as a team and helping each other to achieve common goals.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join your Profession?

Technology is becoming part of our day to day life, so being in this field, not only gives you job security but better-paying jobs as the market is so competitive. Being in a good stable company would also provide good work-life balance and awesome work-culture. Being a software engineer, you would get independence of working from home when needed and also job does not demand too much travel.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career in your Profession?

Being a software developer, you are expected to learn and keep your self updated on the changing technologies. Work pressure might become an issue if you are working in a start-up or small size company as each individual is given a bigger responsibility. If you love travelling on the job, this might not be one for you as this job does not require any field work or meeting with customers unless it is a consultancy company.
