With the progression of age and increasing level of family commitments, it may become difficult to maintain the same zeal, courage, and stamina to hold on to the same level of steadfast resolution and determination towards the profession that so typically characterizes the freshers. Moreover, in a bid to reduce cost, companies prefer to replace experienced resources with freshers.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to become a Consultant?

On-site opportunities could motivate someone to join this industry. With a bit of luck and strategy, it is possible to travel to onshore and stay there from a week to several years depending on the nature of the assignment and immigration policy of the country you can travel to. Onsite locations could potentially augment earning and hence, it is something one aspires to travel to. Innovation lies at the core of this industry. People with creative mind will appreciate the air of innovation that surrounds this industry. Creativity is appreciated and rewarded. Lastly, the IT offices provide an infrastructure that helps one cruise in their work life pretty comfortably, for example, air conditioning inside office premise ergonomic sitting arrangements, cleanliness, facilities of work from home etc. All these factors really encourage people to be a part of this profession.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career as Consultant?

Work-life balance is often missing and is likely to be a cause of exasperation for many as timelines are very stringent, thanks to continuous endeavors on the part of each organization to win tenders by biding lowest possible price for a project and committing to unrealistic timelines. Night shifts for people engaged in operational support roles could be hazardous. DevOps mode of delivery could entail health hazards for those who are not comfortable working at night. Extreme competitiveness amongst peers can lead to a lack of mutual empathy and cooperation as everyone aspires for similar positions and opportunities in industry and hence resorting to shrewd tactics for personal gains is not uncommon. The job itself is very risky as freshers are more likely to displace experienced workforce due to cost, flexibility and agility factor.
