Please give us a summary of your Career.

I started off my career almost thirty years ago. From the start, I have been associated with small business ventures. So, initially, I worked with my relatives for some time, trying to acquire relevant skills and attitude that is suitable for this particular vocation. I learned the art of maintaining records, dealing with clients, supply demand model from my family members, who were already well established in the field. Before starting off with my own business, I have not been associated for long with any single unit. I continuously moved from one business firm or venture to another. I have dealt with handlooms, textiles, and footwear in the past.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities.

Well presently, I own a footwear store in Tundla, Firozabad and I am involved with all the facets of it. On a regular day, particularly if it is the ending of the week, my shop and the market where it is situated are jam packed. I deal with the clients, supervise and manage the staff, keep a close check on the maintenance of accounts and make sure that the finished products reach the store on time. To manage the store is undoubtedly a Herculean task. I have to be very alert with my staff members and available for the clients and customers. Also, I personally make sure that none of the product gets damaged either by the staff or by the customers.

Stress is a part of every professional or non-professional field. My field is no different. Also, my job involves dealing with new clients and customers and staff on a regular basis, so sometimes the environment does become stressful. Also, business is not done with emotions, you need to have a strong sense of earning profits, else your venture may not reach the heights you want it to. You have to be organized, sorted and well disciplined in terms of your personality, else you would not be able to manage your business.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join your Profession?

“You are your own boss”, well, that is what took me towards this field apart from the fact that my family members had always been involved with some or the other business ventures. I like the fact that I can decide things for my own self and there is no one who would howl at me and force rules and regulations upon me. This field is particularly good for those who want to deal with people. I mean, over the course of so many years I’ve met so many different people as my customers, clients and staff members and even business partners. You get a chance to learn something new from everyone. In case your business plans workout, your there is no limit to which your income can increase. There are chances of great profits. You also can innovate and create your own designs if you please. There is a scope of innovation in this field.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career in your Profession?

I guess being always available for my customers is what bugs me at times. You have to be completely involved with every activity that goes on inside your store or else your staff or the supplier might cheat you. Dealing with customers sometimes becomes irritating particularly when they criticize your work or ridicule your store. I’ve met quite a few customers of the sort. And lastly I’d say that if your understanding of business is not great and you are not alert and focussed then the business venture might just fail.
