I work as a data engineer in a startup called Quantiphi. It is a New York-based startup and does the analytics for big leagues like Google, Netflix, American Football League, B.A.R.C., ZeeTV and so on. I have had 3 years of experience so far which has been great. My job mainly includes data handling and data processing. We usually have different companies as the clients which ask us to convert their data into a format which can be easily analyzed. We are a team of people who work closely with data scientists who help us with our job.
Please describe your current Job Responsibilities as Data Engineer.
As mentioned earlier, my job as Data Engineer is mainly data handling and data processing. One needs to be very comfortable with coding languages like Oracle, SQL, Python etc for this. For example, let us take Netflix. We are given a set of data from them which we are supposed to convert in a format which can be easily understood. For the taken example, we are supposed to analyze every episode of the given series and notes down the screen time for each actor and then match it with the viewer ratings of different age groups. This helps them understand which part of the story should they focus on and which part should be dropped based on the audience.

To become a Data Engineer, one needs to have amazing technical skills for this job. If you plan to be a data engineer, you should be very comfortable with your coding and mathematics.
What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to become a Data Engineer?
This job has a great scope for the future. Every company and brand needs Data Engineers so that they can sell their product in a more efficient way. Being a startup which is based out of India, I get opportunities to handle client calls and talk to people from out of the country. This job provides me with a good salary and has a great income potential. The infrastructure of the workplace is also very good and the people who you work are very helpful. You are respected by your bosses, who are very friendly.
What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career as Data Engineer?
One thing that I would consider as a negative is the office timings. There are days when I leave for office at 8 in the morning and come back by 11 in the night. There are situations when the client tends to change their given data at the last minute. Hence, we need to change our code in a very less time. This tends to be very stressful at times because how much ever you are comfortable with your coding, it is not sure that all your codes will work in the first go.
