Please give us a summary of your Career.

After completing my MBBS degree from Government Medical College, Chandigarh, Chandigarh, I opened my own clinic with the help of my family. I wanted to be my own boss and hence, I avoided working in a hospital. The timings tend to be a bit irregular and you have to be present in the clinic for any kind of medical emergency. My job mainly Includes treating people with sickness and referring them to the hospital in case it is serious. I have spent the last 24 years of my life in this career. Even though the income might not be good at times, it feels good to treat people and save lives.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities.

My normal day starts with me going to the clinic to see my patients. I hardly ever get a day off and the income also tends to be low at times. Since my only source of Income in the Clinic, the income part becomes more like how it is in a business. I need to be there in case of any medical emergency at any hour, be it 3 in the morning or 2 in the afternoon. There are some days when I hardly get patients and I get to spend time with my family and there are some days when there is no time to breathe. One main important things about this profession are that one really needs to be hardworking and should know about the latest developments in the field.

Please provide details

One needs to be very responsible and hardworking for this job. If there is an emergency at any oddest hour, you need to be there. Being a doctor is a full-time job and it requires a lot of determination and patience.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join your Profession?

One really good thing about this job is saving someone’s life. The feeling is simply too good and it makes all the struggles worth it. Every single patient you treat is like your contribution to this society. Apart from that, you can also work in various NGOs and social services. There is a lot of pride in being a doctor and you get a lot of respect from your family and society. Having my own clinic kind off makes me my own boss. This makes it easier for me to manage my personal and professional life the way I want to.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career in your Profession?

The income in this job is limited. Even if you are a Radiologist and have your own clinic, more than half of what you earn goes in the rental of the different kind of machines used. Opening your own clinic also requires a lot of investment, which is a bit risky. One needs to be available and approachable at all times. Also, this is a very competitive field and one needs to work really hard to clear the examinations. I had to take a year’s gap to do that.
