Please give us a summary of your Career.

My career started as a government school teacher around four decades ago. And for over thirty years, I worked as a school teacher before becoming a lecturer in a college. As a school teacher, my responsibilities included preparing the class curriculum, creating lesson plans, tracking student progress, helping them understand the basics of the various subjects, working with the school administration to prepare standardized tests. I tried to ensure a positive environment for all my students where all of them could garner knowledge while at the same time come to get back to me with constructive criticism.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities as Asst. Professor.

At the college level, I am required to help the students articulate themselves in a rational and critical manner. Being the Asst. Professor, I take regular classes where I deal with the prescribed syllabus and also I ensure that I make contemporary topics a part of our classroom discussions to ensure wholesome learning. As I am closely involved with the Hindi language, I try to make sure that my students are well versed with new works. As a means of engaging closely with my students, I also promote their participation in cultural activities and I myself take up the leadership of some of the cultural programmes.

Please provide details

You need to be a calm person as you will be dealing with a lot of curriculum at the same time. You also need to manage your time as it is difficult to constantly engage yourself with one subject only.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to become an Asst. Professor?

The biggest advantage would be that we get to learn something new everyday due to our constant interaction with the younger generation. If not about the academic subject, the knowledge can also be in terms of life perspectives, or technology or behavioral patterns. The working hours are reasonable. We do not have to stay out for too long and late at night. You get to share your passion with so many people. You get to have an impact on young minds and mould them into idealistic individuals.
Also, the work settings are not generally very competitive like it is in the MNC’s and thus it is an amicable setting that we get to work in mostly.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career as Asst. Professor?

Well, in India the biggest drawback of becoming a part of this profession would be that with the coming in of privitization, hardly any permanent recruitment is being done. Then, it is tough to live the life of a lecturer as the salary is meagre and you will have to work for extra hours. Infrastructural facilities are not very good in some of the colleges and people face problems in even finding a decent place to sit in these colleges. Lastly, income growth is slow and not guaranteed particularly.
