Please give us a summary of your Career.
I got into this business through my grandfather. This establishment dates back to his earlier days, he founded this company or rather a publication house which has published over 1000 books and has earned a very good reputation in the field of literature. I got into this when I came to Mysore to study BE, I live with my grandparents so I thoroughly observed how my grandfather worked and have picked up the work from him after me joining the association. We have published about 10-15 books by famous authors and poets.
Please describe your current Job Responsibilities as second in command at a publishing house.
My basic responsibilities are marketing and selling. The books business is currently not working out as well as we would like, so I need to figure out ways to sell the product and attract new customers. Arranging book release functions and ensuring its success is what is my aim. The demand for Kannada books is very low, so it is my duty to ensure that we get the maximum profit out of the books that we publish. I also go about some supplying duties as people order the books from various cities, it is my responsibility to ensure that the books reach them.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join Publishing Profession?
It may be able to make you a millionaire but it gives us the satisfaction that we are keeping our language alive and the best of all, the books are a joy to read and to a true language admirer, it is a gift. It also depends on the marketing and the respect or the reputation we have. If you have a good reputation, then it is smooth sailing and it is difficult to build a good reputation, but once it is up and running the money & fame will follow.
What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career in Book Publishing Profession?
It is a very unstable market which makes it difficult to predict whether a book can be sold and a profit can be made. There are times when losses are incurred but we have to keep faith in the book. It is the only option sometimes. We try to publish books by famous authors and make selling a sure thing. People may not pick this profession because it will not make them a large amount of money and the stress that comes with it. Many would not be willing to take this up as a profession as there are better things out there.
