Please give us a summary of your Career.

I started teaching in 2009 and taught as a Primary Teacher, English in Presentation Convent Senior Secondary School for one year and took a break for some time. I resumed my teaching career in 2011 as a Primary Teacher in Banyan International School, Jammu. And, I have been working here for the past 7 years and have taught English to Classes 3,4,5 and 6. Also, I have been the class teacher for 5th standard during most of my teaching career. All these years, I have been teaching English and it has been a mentally stressful task as students of this age group are difficult to handle.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities as Primary Teacher.

Currently, I am the class teacher of class 5 and I take English for classes 5 and 6. Basically, I should be given a TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher) Grade as 75% of my work includes handling TGT Class level. I take up Value Education, General Knowledge and co-curricular activities for my own class. I am allotted substitutions in my free periods and my normal workday includes checking notebooks and preparing for assemblies. On an average, I am given one free period to do my evaluation of notebooks and prepare question papers for quizzes and upcoming tests.

You need to be cheerful around students and not let your personal issues affect your work environment and also be extremely patient as each student has its own pace to learn.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to become a Primary Teacher?

Stability is one factor as there is stability with regard to work responsibility and location, I do not have to travel for work. The other is time management as I can manage my work life and balance both due to a fixed routine. A cooperative work culture as it helps one learn how to function in a group and present the best possible solutions. It also gives you a satisfaction as you are imparting knowledge and mng the future citizens into better individuals.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career as Primary Teacher?

There is no growth in this profession and there is a stagnation in this career prospect. You can not be very creative with regard to your approach as the routine is mundane and trying to not follow the set pattern might lead to problems. This profession tends to get boring as the same routine has to be followed and also, there is no scope for personal development per say as no great intellectual transformation takes place.

If I am allowed to take up a profession, I would still pick up what I am currently doing. However, I would like to finish my post graduation and would like to take up teaching the higher classes.
