Please give us a summary of your Career.
I worked as an Editor at Vitasta Publishing House in 2014. This brief stint was followed by working at Tripoto Travels Private Limited as a Travel Content Writer. I worked at Tripoto for almost 3 years and gained insight into the travel sector. The responsibilities included creating online content, traveling and writing about my travel experiences. Working at this vibrant start-up and donning several hats each day at work was a learning experience. In August 2017, my friend Sambit Dattachaudhuri and I founded The Doi Host with the intention to create more local travel experiences and create job opportunities for people in the remote areas of India through sustainable tourism. I also work as a freelance travel writer for Tripoto and other online travel portals and magazines.
Please describe your current Job Responsibilities.
My job responsibilities as a Founding Member at The Doi Host include creating and monitoring the brand each day and making sure that it stands true to the principle of sustainability upon which it was founded. A lot of time is spent traveling to the hill stations of India designing experiences which involve the locals. We try to find ways and means to create a regular source of income for talented individuals in the villages who can be hosts or trip leaders. I also travel along with the guests on the trips to ensure that they have a good and memorable experience traveling with us.

I would like to simplify my profession and define myself as a trip guide and a travel writer. It is more of a lifestyle than a profession. It would be hard to understand success in this field by viewing it through the parameters of a conventional job. The profession sure does not guarantee a salary hike after certain years of experience but it all depends on the skills you hone over the years and the work you choose to do to gain satisfaction. For a travel writer, there are immense opportunities if you make your skill irreplaceable. In the profession as a trip guide, it depends on you how you wish to apply the knowledge you have gained over the years. It can be used for the betterment of the society that you have studied so well while traveling. It is your creativity that will pave the path.

One of the biggest positives of this profession would be that at the end of it all you will have a life well lived. At any given point of time, you will have more stories to tell than anyone else in a room. If you are enterprising enough, these experiences can be priceless. Stay curious and ready to learn, a traveling lifestyle would give you enough opportunities to use your skills and creativity in ways that you can not imagine.
What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career as Travel Entrepreneur?
It requires double the hard work to ensure the employers of your professionalism when you are working remotely as a writer. While many people might find the idea of working remotely liberating, it is a great task to define how you are going to sustain your life on the road. What is the ease of starting own business in this field?
To start a business in the travel sector requires you to gain field experience for years. It is essential to travel to the same destinations, again and again, to make it a foolproof experience for your guests. Of course, people do it as third-party vendors but to create an authentic brand and do it responsibly, it requires a lot of traveling and can be physically taxing.
Secondly, marketing your ideas is as difficult as fieldwork itself. You must have a know-how of not just the places you travel to but also the psyche of your clients and understand what they need in a travel experience.
How easy is it to move to a different country in this profession?
Now you have several years of work experience and you have seen professions of others. If you are taken back to 10th/12th class and allowed to pick a profession, then which profession will you pick and why?
I would have chosen exactly what I am doing right now. I have always been inclined towards the creative field of work. Working as a travel writer and trip guide has helped me explore my creative side in ways I would have never known.
