I was born and brought up in a small village in Kerala. My schooling was from a nearby government school and I finished my college education from SD College Alappuzha. I took up Zoology as my major subject in college. I decided to prepare for a government job right after my college. In 1988, I got my job through a competitive exam conducted by the Indian Railways. I started my career in Indian railways as a Junior Accounts Assistant. My first posting was in Mumbai. Even though I considered my job as an income source at first, soon I realized my liking towards my job was growing. I had the opportunity to work in different places like Mumbai, Tamilanadu, Kerala etc.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join Indian Railways?
There is freedom to work and express ideas is definitely a plus point. Job security will add on to the list of positives. Personally, I like the work culture in government jobs; here we get intelligent, energetic and responsible colleagues of age ranging from 21 to 60. So, you have a lot of different thought processes working together at the same time. Working in different locations due to my transfers to different cities made me more open-minded and adaptive. Our work is always within the assigned time, so we get to enjoy a good work-life balance.
What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career in Indian Railways?
In Indian Railways, you have not much say in your job locations, so you have to relocate as your job requires. The pay and promotions here are quite good in my opinion, but if you are an overachiever and ambitious you may find this job less satisfying. You need to stay away from family sometimes due to sudden transfers or promotions, ad it is not possible to always shift with your family as well. This job needs you to handle lots of data, so you have to be very attentive and cautious while doing your job.
