Please give us a summary of your Career.

After the completion of my Master’s degree, I worked at an MNC for 2 years. I was not satisfied enough as my job site was quite far away from my hometown and the pay was not worth the hard work and effort. I returned to Punjab and applied at LPU at the post of a lecturer. Working here for 3 years, I enrolled myself here for a P.hD. Now along with my Ph.D., I am and will be teaching here unless I decide to get retired. Now with the increase in opportunities, many new avenues have opened up for me.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities as Lecturer.

On weekdays, being the lecturer I have to take a lot of lectures in a day: 3-4 being theory lectures and 2 being practical labs. Being an ECE teacher, I have to help my students with the theory, numerical as well as practicals. Apart from this, I also have to conduct class tests after a specific time and take care of assignments. I am also the Vice Head of a club that deals with the making of electronic devices for student welfare. So, I also have to take care of the activities of that club. For example, the interviews for members and meetings etc. On a majority of the weekends, we have a holiday unless you have to conduct some extra classes to complete the syllabus.

A successful lecturer is definitely one who understands that they are shaping many lives. You do not stop learning. You should be regularly updated about new technologies, new theories, and new opportunities. And you should have a strong personality in terms of values, confidence, honesty, and integrity.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to Become a Lecturer?

What I love about being a Lecturer is pursuing new and interesting problems, keeping in touch with technical developments, and even other socio-economic-political developments around the world. You get to meet interesting people visiting the campus and even while teaching the students. We can remain in touch with the youth on campus. We can inspire them and get inspired by them. This profession carries a lot of respect in society. The position carries respect from students and staff, especially in an Indian setting.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career as Lecturer?

There are not many negatives to being a lecturer when you compare the work environments of professors to somebody working in the mid-management of a corporation. The worst are legal staff approvals. Salary is low in comparison to other local employers. Many faculty members do not expect to get an extremely high salary. If you are a professor who is untenured, your life is full of hardships. Until you are tenured, you simply cannot relax in life.
