Please give us a summary of your Career.
I started my career in 1986 just as I completed my diploma in Mechanical Engineering as a Loco Pilot. Later, I was promoted as the Controller and presently, I am the Inspector. I still had a year before my retirement but I will be taking a Voluntary Retirement Scheme at the end of September 2018 due to my physical conditions. This was my first job and the last job till the day I retire and I had complete job satisfaction here. I had always dreamt of a job like this and could actually serve people with my best.
Please describe your current Job Responsibilities.
My profession is basically fieldwork where I had to travel along with the rail drivers to note if they were driving carefully with rapt attention. Train operation was also looked after by me. I was responsible for counseling the drivers during the initial days of their service to make them understand that they are responsible for the lives of all the passengers on the train. Besides this, for any rail accident, family counseling was a major part of my profession. Signal and line inspection followed by stationmaster inspection included my other duties.

The positives of my profession are many. Firstly, this is a government job and job security is very high. In the present world where the unemployment rate is very high job stability and security is a key component in positives. There is the financial stability as well where the income potential is very high. The benefits enjoyed being a government employee are many. Free hospital expenses, cost of child education include some of the benefits provided to us.
What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career in your Profession?
The negatives associated with my profession include family disturbance as the workload is constantly present. There are no specific duty hours and one may have to move on duty at any time of the day. The profession is quite stressful. Any mistake on the part of the loco pilot comes upon the individual as he is the inspector. Thus, you have to be very particular about every detail of your job. Frequent traveling is needed at most parts of the career as one cannot specifically point at the place of duty.
