I started my career in 1986, where I worked under my father’s acquaintance in an office of a rolling mill in Kolkata. There, I learned everything about the business including sales, purchase, accounting and gained a lot of experience. After a couple of years, my boss wanted to expand his business and suggested me to become a distributor and to open a store for building materials in my hometown (Serampore). My father and my boss jointly provided the capital I needed to open my store. In this way, on 1st December 1989, Agarwal Enterprise was established. Its been almost 30 years since I started my own business and it has grown exponentially ever since.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities.

My current job responsibilities include buying building materials likes cement, iron rods, stone hips etc from companies like SRMB, Ambuja Cement and selling it to promoters, house builders and private landowners. It also includes managing taxation, billing and gathering information on the market. Sometimes, I even have to go to marketing in different areas to expand my territory, reload or unload trucks with building materials, check transport status and attain company meetings regarding price, schemes, and quality of the materials. I also visit project sites frequently.

You should think about yourself before others because no one out there will be thinking about you. People who wish to be successful and are passionate about their profession will surely succeed. People who are easy-going and make decisions in haste are likely to suffer. So I suggest only people having past experiences and a business mind to pursue this profession.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join your Profession?

If your store offers best deals, is well known and have great transportation facility, you can earn much more than normal businessmen even in your starting years. It can be confusing and tough initially if you have zero experience, but once you know your job, it is really easy and even working 6 to 7 hours a day can be satisfying and can give you huge profits. It has a great work-life balance as you can work less and efficiently and earn more. You will get enough time for your family and friends and for trips. The best thing is you do not have to travel much and move around from one city to another. Moreover, the iron rod selling companies also provide a great number of offers on selling a particular amount of their goods which even include internationals trips and cars.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career in your Profession?

There are a few negatives of the profession everyone considering joining this profession should be aware of. First, you should always be calm and make the right decision after careful thinking. A decision taken in haste is always wrong and can exhaust your capital. Fluctuations in prices of materials can be a huge loss and can also exhaust all of your capital. Hence, it is important to always keep knowledge about the price change. Promoters and other private house builders can steal your money or not pay for a long time, make sure you know about the person before selling him goods in credit. Most importantly, do not be too cooperative if it is giving you a loss, be fair and do not try to make everyone happy.
