After completing my Masters in Chemistry, I was really interested in pursuing a career that will allow me to apply chemistry in daily life as well. So I started preparing myself for the UPSC examination and meanwhile engaged myself in providing a large number of students private tuition at home in chemistry. I enjoyed my teaching career a lot and had total satisfaction. I have qualified NET, GATE, SET, UPSC(thrice) and then, at last, took the decision of joining as Group A chemist. To be honest, I decided to go for the profession as it called for the actual application of chemistry.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities as Group A chemist.

My work completely involves fieldwork. The daily responsibilities include a number of works including sample analysis. Water and steam sedimentation that actually helps in mineral exploration come under one of the very basics in my fieldwork. Besides these, I do have a number of office work that includes having a clear understanding of all the samples analyzed and help my workers have a clear understanding of what they are actually doing. It is a work for the entire nation and thus, requires utmost patience and accuracy.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join the Geological Survey of India as a Chemist?

My profession is such that it is a work for the nation. It not only enlightens us but also helps to develop a strong bond with our own motherland. Job as chemist provides an opportunity to apply chemistry directly in the daily life. It breaks the stereotypical outlook that chemistry is studied only to enter into the teaching profession. It may help one to gain knowledge in geochemistry. The job stability is the best of all.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career as Chemist in Geological Survey of India?

Negativity is associated with every profession and is an integral part of every profession. My profession allows only a limited part of chemistry to be applied. I am in charge of a number of individuals who are actually involved in sample analysis but as I am the head, I am answerable to the authority for any wrongdoing. It is diverted from pure chemistry. It does not allow own plans to be executed.
