I worked there for about four years and in 1991 became the Assistant Station Master. I worked in the same position for approximately six years and in 1997, I became a Grade C Guard and worked in the Goods trains. It was only in 2017 that I was promoted to work as a Grade A Special Guard in Mail Express Trains.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities in Railways.

When in the Operating Section, my job responsibilities included more of office work, especially the attendance work of the employees. As an Assistant Station Master, I used to assist my seniors and ensure that all tasks are completed as per the rulebook.
In my present designation, my job responsibilities primarily include supervising the safety and amenities of the passengers boarding the train. I also have to take care of the exchanging of signals and occasionally have to supervise the train drivers, TTEs and the working of the pantry car.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join your Profession?

The first and foremost positive thing about the profession is the job security. Being under the Government sector, it is a very secure job. Secondly, the field offers a high pay scale which serves as a very common incentive which attracts people towards it.
Also, we can travel with families to several places through passes which again serves as a very attractive incentive especially for those who love traveling. The good work culture too is a compelling positive thing about the field.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career in Railways?

The biggest negative thing about this profession is its hectic schedule. Guards can be called on duty at any hour of the day just a couple of hours before the train is scheduled to arrive. Secondly, the duty hours require constant attention and constant traveling which gets very exhausting at the end of the day when done on a daily basis.
The work hours sometimes allow no time for personal life. Constant traveling and exposure to all kinds of weather more often than not affect the health adversely as the years pass by.
