Please give us a summary of your Career.

I started off with this profession as an advocate with a lot of curiosity. This field was a highly recommended one back then, just as the professions of engineering and medicine are still popular today. Initial practice under a skilled person gave me the experience to deal with the different ranges of issues that come up. The work atmosphere was completely new for this field back then. The income will always depend on the type of cases you take up. However, starting off with smaller cases gave me a lot of growth in terms of understanding what is required of me a lot better.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities as Lawyer.

The most basic job responsibility includes being patient enough to explore the cases I receive and then, choosing the right one to work on. Listening to the clients helps me explore the case a lot better. However, there needs to be constant research on my part as I have to refer to law books and find all the possible ways of getting the most accurate way to deal with the case. I have to take a firm stand and present the case in a manner that will bring justice to the client. However, there may be a time that there can be a failure in some cases, I have to try and gather courage and proceed further.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career as Lawyer?

It often does not pay nearly what one thinks it pays. There is a lot of competitive pressure on billings, because of an over-supply of attorneys. Keeping track of billable hours is absolutely the worst thing ever. It takes up so much time. One is tempted to skip it in the crush of deadlines, phone calls, brief conferences with associated, etc., then at the end of the day, it is hard to reconstruct what you did with your time all day, and as a result, I tend to under-bill. For some lawyers, especially recent graduates, student loans are a terrible millstone about one’s neck. It takes a long time to build up a clientele or a book of business. Some lawyers can find it extremely difficult to do so.
