Please give us a summary of your Career.

I joined SBI in 1994 as Clerk. After 8 years service got promoted as Officer. Posted in various cities, town, and villages. I have worked in different positions like Field Officer, Branch Manager, Manager of Loan Division, Manager HR, Chief Manager Advances. My current job responsibilities as chief manager include scrutinizing loan applications, verifying KYC and credentials of borrowers. Sanctioning of Advances and supervision and their follow up are some things I have to do on a daily basis. The recovery of advance is the most challenging task. However, getting the co-op of government officials in the recovery of advance is also crucial for loan recovery. I also have to look at settlements of bad loans through compromise, at times.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities as Chief Manager.

My daily job responsibilities entail the supervision of loan portfolio of the branches under the region, and the consequent system and procedures followed by the branches. I check if the banks’ lending policies are being followed by the branches. I have to ensure that every target assigned to the branches is efficiently met with. There is the allocation of required resources in the necessary departments and ensuring their delivery to all the nodes in the region. I need to conduct regular, extremely frequent on-site visits to ensure that money allocated to individuals/ corporation as loans are being utilized for the mentioned purpose. I also have to manage the execution of all actions necessary against defaulters, if any.

Stress is a very prominent spect in a banker’s life. So, you need to be calm and level-headed. You may have to work in different cities. Hence, you should be able to adapt to your surroundings well. That can also be stressful for some people.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join your Profession?

Since there are a lot of aspects I need to take care of as Chief Manager, I never really know what the day may hold for me. However, that can also make the very interesting and it is something to look forward to. There is a lot of travel involved. it can get hectic but that also depends on the type of personality you have. The work culture is good. It is a prestigious job in society, work-life balance depends entirely on the individual It is a transferable job, you will be required to move every two to three years. There is a lot of job security and there is a steady growth in income over the years. Due to staff shortage, it is becoming difficult to get leave but the organization does provide you with a lot of incentives.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career as Chief Manager in Banking?

The income is average, especially when one is starting off in their career. Work-life balance is somewhat difficult to maintain as you are constantly on the move. You may have to stay alone, away from your family as it may not be possible for the entire family to shift as frequently. This can be extremely difficult for some people. Working hours are nine to ten hours, daily or maybe longer, depending on the day. Priorities get changed every day. Whatever you may have planned in the morning, may not be executable after three hours.

I would like to be a professor at a college. Teaching students of college is a difficult job but it is a rewarding profession. The income is good and has relatively fewer amount of stress.
