Please give us a summary of your Career.
I started my career on a very small-scale, by starting my own woodwork boutique in my house. I specialized in children’s furniture, mostly bookshelves, theme-bedrooms, etc. and even children’s stationery. They were just a few orders that I would get from time to time. It was not a full-time job back then as I was a homemaker as well and had greater responsibilities. Eventually, I moved on to organizing birthday parties and small- budget marriages before starting an event management company 15 years ago.
Please describe your current Job Responsibilities.
A major part of my day is consumed by meeting with the clients and deciding all the details of their event and most importantly, finalizing the budget and trying to manage everything under it. However, after that, I have to divide up my staff into various teams- Design, Logistics, etc. according to each event and see to it that all the demands are being met within a proper manner and that the clients are happy with the work. It is because of this that my schedule can get very erratic on some days.

Please provide details
It is a profession where you have to keep a lot of options for the clients but in order for you to do that, you need to be extremely organized and need to have a cool head as you never know what kind of situation may rise up at a given time.
What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join your Profession?
It is a very giving profession in terms of meeting new people and learning about new cultures since a lot of my work has involved wedding planning. You are always on the move and you never know what the day has in store for you. Therefore, you get away from the monotony of a 9 to 5 job, which also gives you the benefit of getting a new experience every day. You learn to deal with all kinds of people- right from the client to the vendors. However, the most important is the feeling of self-satisfaction as the client is happy with your work.
What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career in your Profession?
Though it is your own work, you are doing it with and for someone else. Therefore, the hours are very hectic, which makes the personal life take a toll where you have no time for yourself. There are no real vacations as such and you are most busy during the “wedding season”. There will be times when the clients are very difficult to deal with and can have unreasonable demands, making your job even more difficult.

Now you have several years of work experience and you have seen professions of others. If you are taken back to 10th/12th class and allowed to pick a profession, then which profession will you pick and why?
I will still pick this profession because I had to face a lot of hardships with my family in order to start my own work. Meeting new people and not knowing what new challenge I will be facing next, adds to the thrill of the profession.
