I started as a Technical Graduate Trainee at Bosch India in Purchasing Quality Management. My main focus was on improving the supplied parts quality through proper problem-solving techniques for the root cause, take appropriate action and implement solutions to stop recurring problems. I was there for 3 years. Later, I joined Toyota India in Purchase Engineering Dept. It was mainly to develop suppliers to the level of requirements of quality, delivery and management systems. The scope involved auditing of suppliers and identify areas of improvement, plan for improvement actions and implementation. I had to do periodic reviews and audits to confirm the progress and ensuring management involvement in overall company development in their quality, delivery and management systems. I worked for Toyota for 6.5 years. Now, I am in Scania CV for the last 5.5 years. I started as supplier quality, then sourcing and now, I am in Project Management.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to become a Project Manager?
I have mixed profile experience of supplier quality, supplier development, and project management. For people who like to travel and sit less at the office, supplier development is the profile. You travel to many places, meet new people, see different manufacturing processes and technologies, learn a lot from suppliers. On the other hand, project management may have fewer travels (depends on the company and project profile and project managers’ responsibility). As a project manager, you will have better access to management. You learn a lot about stakeholder management.
What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career as Project Manager?
Travel may look interesting at the beginning of the career. However, it may become a less interest as you grow. Based on project timings and need, sometimes, it may be hectic traveling which may affect your work life balance, especially for people who are married and have children.
Being a Project Manager, you may handle multiple projects, some maybe interesting, some may not (depends on your interest and scope of project). In some cases, you may not have any travel. Mostly manage everything in-house, again, depending on what kind of a personality you have.
