Please give us a summary of your Career.
I first started my career not in this field but as a teacher. My first job was of a teacher at Junior High School situated at Burdwan. I joined the institution in 1992 as a commerce teacher and taught there for about a year. However, in 1993 I left the job. In the same year, I joined Life Insurance Corporation which is often considered as the largest insurance company in India. I joined in 1993 as a Development Officer and I have been earning my bread through this job since then.
Please describe your current Job Responsibilities.
As a Development Officer of Life Insurance Corporation, my job responsibilities primarily include recruitment of insurance agents. And nurturing and motivating them to work as a team and contribute towards the desired goals of the firm. We are given a certain business target to fulfill. And our aim remains to reach that target within the given time with a team of say, 50 agents. The agents can be working as a part timer or full time. It’s a DO’s role to guide and train them and at the same time procure business through the team.

Since this field is one of high competition. One has to be exceptionally skilled to excel. At the same time, one has to adapt and tackle with all kinds of situations. Which make it very important to have a mild temperament and presence of mind.
What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join your Profession?
The foremost positive of this profession, according to me, is the kind of exposure one gets to the world. We get to meet a variety of people of contrasting personalities. That help us gain experience and deal with situations in a much better way. Also, the respect and social recognition that one receives in this field give you a sense of pride. There is a capacity to build and lead a team that will further enhance one’s personality which further helps with future job prospects.
What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career in your Profession?
There is immense work pressure to fulfill the given business targets within a stipulated time period. Being in this field, we seldom get any free time for our personal lives or even for ourselves. Secondly, this job is quite challenging as Development Officers need to consider and build a team of people with various interests and temperaments to work towards a common goal. This field comes with high-stress levels that can affect one’s health adversely.
