Please give us a summary of your Career.

I recently started my professional career. I was a housewife until five years ago. Solely on the basis of my diploma, I entered the field of fashion designing as an independent designer. Slowly, as I built my brand, I hired a few people to work under me. I hail from a reserved family, so it was difficult to start out. However, as I gradually started earning and making a name for myself, my self-respect grew and even my family, friends and others around me began giving me respect, and this encouraged me. I started from making bags and stationery, and now I make clothes, bags and kids’ stationery. It has been a long and fruitful journey.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities.

I design and make clothes, bags, and kids stationery. This also involves dealing with vendors and manufacturers to get samples, and then procure the final products. Apart from the designing aspect, I am also involved in pedalling my products in the Chinese trade market. A huge chunk of my responsibilities is and putting up stalls in exhibitions. I design and set up stalls at exhibitions, and these exhibitions serve as my primary point of contact with other exhibition organizers, manufacturers and other people in the industry. Another important task I do is to constantly expand my social media presence, which is currently limited to Facebook and Instagram.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join your Profession?

In this profession, one gets to do the thing they’re passionate about – make innovate and pretty products. The sense of pride when people appreciate your designs and use your products is unparalleled. You can pace your year as you would like to – you can be your own boss in deciding when and how many products to design in a year, and how many exhibitions to attend. Networking, although a daunting task, can be very easy and certainly helpful as the community is very warm and the interactions are always healthy.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career in your Profession?

Whenever you’re in the grind, things can get very hectic and stressful. You end up working long hours and late nights. Family time can get severely affected as a result of this. My schedule gets very busy because designing can be a very time-consuming affair, and then once the design phase is over, it’s time to visit as many exhibitions as possible to get maximum exposure. Also, profit and loss are extremely unpredictable in this line of work. In a way, this profession is also seasonal. Most consumers buy only during major festivals like Holi, Diwali etc.
