Please give us a summary of your Career.

After completing a vocational course on Radiography from West Bengal, I started my career in 1985 as an X-Ray Technician in Heavy Engineering Corporation Hospital situated at Ranchi, Jharkhand. I worked there for about four years.
After leaving Ranchi, I got a job as a medical technologist (X-Ray) in Tata Main Hospital, Jamshedpur. I was posted in 1989 in the department of Radiography. I have been working here for the last 29 years and have risen to be the senior radiographer.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities as Radiographer.

As a senior radiographer in one of the most premier medical institutions of Jamshedpur, my primary job responsibility is to help patients diagnose their medical condition through X-Rays. I have to undertake MRIs and CT Scans for the same.
I have to perform an imaging diagnostic exam and have to ensure that patients are not only aware of the procedure but also have consented to it. Also, I have to take care of the safety norms that are associated with radiation.

This profession does not allow many variations in general. So instead of multitasking, focus, and observation on the present task help a lot. Also one must have the patience to explain and handle all types of patients.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to become a Radiographer?

This profession offers good employment opportunities as almost every medical institute has a functional radiography department.
Secondly, by handling updated equipment, we get to know about new medical advances and stay in touch with the scientific progress of the era.
The job security in this field is also quite high.
Lastly, the mental satisfaction of serving and helping people in need serves as a common incentive for the job.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career as Radiographer?

The foremost negative aspect of this profession is the constant exposure to radiation. Long time exposure to the radiation leads to health issues in later years of life.
Secondly, this field is not as lucrative in case of income. The income potential is on its way of increasing but it will take time.
Thirdly, a radiographer has a variety of tasks that need to be done on a daily basis which sometimes results in immense workload, especially in case of emergencies.
