Please give us a summary of your Career.

I joined Durgapur Metaliks Limited in Sept. 2009 as Dispatch In-charge. It was a Group of Steel Industries and I needed to look after the Dispatch of the goods. I was to make sure that Trucks from different Transporters were filled with our finished products. I was also responsible for weighing and checking each Truck, so that the proper amount of Finished products leave the Industry, with zero theft.
Now, I work as a Manager with 50 Hertz Limited, which is a Software Company focussing on Energy Sector.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities as IT Manager.

50 Hertz Limited is a software company where software related to Power Sector is developed for Government Utilities, Industries & Commercial Buildings. Here I look into the following:
Energy Portfolio Management (EPM) – A forecasting software being developed for the DISCOMs/ SLDCs to manage the Load/ Demand of the DISCOMs/ State, which helps them in Demand-Supply management, Trading, and operating decisions
– Verifying the Forecast along with Load and taking corrective actions
– Providing ideas for the development of the software
–  Data Management
– Verifying the timeliness of all the incoming data mainly to prepare the Gap Analysis (Deficit and Surplus scenario) of clients along with Revisions
– Testing the Output/ Result developed by the software and further reporting the Bugs
– Taking Trading decisions on behalf of Clients
– Preparation of Reports

Hertz Energy Analytics (HEA) – A Meter Reading Software being developed for the Industries to view the performances of the machines in terms of Power Consumptions, and daily Savings from daily participation in Power Trading.
– Analysis of Business Requirement
– Verifying the timeliness of all the incoming data
– Testing the Output/ Result developed by the software and further reporting the Bugs
– Testing the Business functionality

Online Bid Management System (OBMS) – A Trading software prepared for Power Trader where their Clients (Generators/Industries) regularly put Bid to trade in Power Exchanges.
– Acting as a Business Analyst for the enhancement of the software
– Acting as a Quality Analyst and find Bugs caused due to the enhancement
– Reporting about the Bugs to the Developer to fix them
– Observing about the completeness of the requirements

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to become an IT Manager?

Things to Learn – Not many of us even know that Power (Electricity) can be Traded in Open Market. Moreover, we have no idea how the Power Market operates and how we get electricity at our doorstep. This is totally a new sector where there are lots of things that we need to know.
Analytical Skill – One need to know how the Business works, need to understand the Business, and then proceed and one will have to deal with too much data will obviously get to know how to handle them.
Corporate Life – Will get an exposure to Corporate Life.
Meeting New People – Will be able to meet new people from various sectors as well as deal with Government officials/ Utilities.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career as an IT Manager?

Income – Income is a bit low
Work Life Balance – will need to serve as per clients requirements and since this is an emergency sector so one need to even work on holidays and on Sundays.
Travel – it is a must till everything is not settled for a client, once it settles down then representatives are placed there who can manage the rest.
Work Culture – Work culture is competitive and everyone tries to prove himself. So, one needs to be at their toe.

Now you have several years of work experience and you have seen professions of others. If you are taken back to 10th/12th class and allowed to pick a profession, then which profession will you pick and why?

I would have gone for Statistics. Since everything today is software based and behind everything, there are some data related to it. So one needs to understand the data and if he grills the data then data will obviously confess in front of you. Knowing and understanding data and analyzing them is of highest priority, and finding out some information from the data is important.
