Please give us a summary of your Career.

My first job was at Railways. I got into Railways in 1976 for a clerical job and was posted in Jamshedpur Railway station. My work was primarily office work which dealt with railway network terminals and other details regarding the coaches and wagons.
I worked for Railways for four years from 1976 – 80. Then I took up a job as a Cashier in 1980 at the Royal Exchange Branch in United Bank of India. I worked there for a number of branches for approximately 37 years. And then I retired as the Chief Cashier in 2015.

What were your Job Responsibilities as Chief Cashier?

As I was the Chief Cashier my primary job responsibility was to deal with the monetary accounts of our customers at the bank. My job was to keep a record of their credits, deposits and overall accounts.
My Job Responsibilities as Chief Cashier also included responsibilities like checking their collaterals and advancing them loans. Other than that, my job responsibilities included handling of net profit and operating profit of the firm and banking half-yearly and yearly closing. Another main responsibility was to check ATM machines when currencies were filled in them. The supervision on behalf of the bank was to ensure avoidance of any malpractices.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join the Banking Sector?

The most common incentive that draws people to this sector is the minimal amount of physical exertion and the salary package that comes with it.
Job in this sector require very low physical activity as almost all of it is desk work. In today’s world, where people run about for the whole day for a mere thousand rupees, this sector gives a considerably good package without the exertion.
It is also because of the high job security that people prefer bank jobs. Also because people enter this sector through merit, they gain recognition and respect in the society.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career as Chief Cashier?

The most common problem that is seen in this sector is at the time of loan repayment. Many people deny or procrastinate returning loans because of which the bank officers have to repeatedly ask or sometimes warn the defaulters.
Also, there is immense pressure during March which marks the end of our fiscal year. Long hours of desk job also sometimes affect the health adversely by straining the eyes and affecting joints and muscles.
