Please give us a summary of your Career.

I started my nursing training at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital at Jamshedpur. I spent 5 years from 1985 to 1990 there.
Then, I worked at some local nursing homes. Rajasthan Seva Sadan Hospital at Jamshedpur was one of them.
My first permanent job was at ISCO in Burnpur, West Bengal. I worked there for two years from 1991 to 1993.
From 1993, I joined Tata Main Hospital that is run by Tata Steel. I currently work as a Senior staff Nurse there.

Please describe your current Job Responsibilities.

I have a shift duty and I generally work for 8 hours a day. Our night duty is of 10 hours.
Our foremost work is to take care of the patient.
My ward is a post-operative ward and has 65 patients. We need to remember which medication has been prescribed to which patient and take rounds with the doctors, make treatment charts, temperature charts, food charts etc. Also we need to divide our time equally for each patient so that we get to attend to all their problems. Being a senior staff, I also have to guide the junior staff members.

One has to be flexible with the situations because we deal with human bodies, which can react to things contrary to expectations. But one also has to be disciplined when a problem occurs or situations can turn otherwise.

What are some of the positives, which would encourage someone to join your Profession?

This profession is a very noble profession as we strive to save human lives. We try our level best to make people as healthy as normal. Our mental satisfaction in saving human lives, thus, is the most positive thing about this field.
The work ethics in this field are very strong. We co-operate with each other to help patients heal.
Nursing is also interesting, as we come across so many people from different backgrounds who help us understand life better.

What are some of the negatives that you would want someone to be aware of when considering a career in your Profession?

1. Pay scale in this field has reduced now because fewer people are made permanent in hospitals and more are kept only on a contract basis.
2. Nursing exposes us to a lot of germs and diseases, which can make us ill and weak too.
3. It can be stressful at times. Especially when people behave outrageously on their patient’s death. Many people not only become unpolite but also violent.
4. The work gets too hectic sometimes, especially when there is a calamity such as wide-spread flu etc.

Working individually as a nurse is not possible. One has to work in a hospital or in a nursing home or with a doctor doing private practice.

How easy is it to move to a different country in this profession?
Impossible
Now you have several years of work experience and you have seen professions of others. If you are taken back to 10th/12th class and allowed to pick a profession, then which profession will you pick and why?

Nursing. Because I wanted to be a part of this field.
